Meet the turtles of Abu Dabbab bay
The seagrass meadows of Marsa Alam are home to green turtles and the elusive dugong. Here’s how — and when — to find them.
Abu Dabbab’s shallow seagrass beds are a year-round feeding ground for green turtles. Mornings are best, when the water is calm and the turtles are busy grazing.
Respectful distance
Keep at least two metres away, never touch, and don’t block a turtle’s path to the surface — they need to breathe. Your guide will show you the best position to watch.
The dugong
Sightings of Abu Dabbab’s dugong are rare and unpredictable — which makes them unforgettable. If you do see one, stay still and let it pass.
